A comprehensive housing needs assessment for the Traverse City area completed in 1996 revealed a severe shortage of low-cost housing. In response, the community organized HomeStretch Nonprofit Housing Corporation to provide quality built, attractive housing. Since then, the demand has not lessened and HomeStretch is committed to providing a variety of affordable housing choices for area working families and individuals.

Service Region: Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, & Leelanau Counties
Number of Homes Built or Acquired to Date: 98 and counting
Total Investment: $13.3 million dollars
Licensing, Designations and Affliations: HomeStretch is a Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO), General Contractor (lic #2102177818 ) and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and a member of the Community Economic Development Association of Michigan (CEDAM). HomeStretch is governed by a 9 member Board of Directors.
As part of its initial strategic planning process the HomeStretch Board of Directors adopted these eight Guiding Principles that provide a decision-making framework that is used in planning housing development:
1. HomeStretch will focus on homeownership development.
2. HomeStretch may participate in rental development.
3. HomeStretch will focus on building housing that serves the needs of households
with incomes that are 80% or less of the Area Median Income (AMI).
4. HomeStretch will locate housing development near employment and essential
services and on existing infrastructure.
5. HomeStretch will collaborate with private, public and nonprofit partners to fulfill its mission.
6. HomeStretch is committed to the long-term affordability of housing.
7. HomeStretch is committed to providing attractive, high quality, energy efficient homes.
8. Whenever possible, HomeStretch will follow the planning and design principles advocated by
New Designs for Growth and Grand Vision.
HomeStretch employs two full time staff members and one part-time:

Kevin Cranson, Development Manager
Melissa Begley, Accounting Manager
